Sandy Springs has a story to tell! On Saturday, March 20, 2010 Heritage Sandy Springs celebrated the Grand Opening of the Heritage Sandy Springs Museum.

The Heritage Sandy Springs Museum is the only museum dedicated to sharing the exciting and vibrant story of our community. Located in the re-purposed Williams-Payne House at Heritage Green, visitors have the opportunity to view three new exhibits:

An anchor exhibit will give visitors an overview of community history.  As the largest and most comprehensive exhibit gallery, "Sandy Springs: Land and People" tells the changing story of our community as the home of Native Americans, rural farmers, and modern suburbanites. Interpretive panels depict key transitions in Sandy Springs history, including the Land Rush, Civil War and Reconstruction, the impact of World War II, the area's growth in the late twentieth century and the struggle to become a city.

Two changing galleries will allow HSS the space to share in-depth exhibits about historical, seasonal and current events. Changing space will also allow many never-before-seen artifacts from our collection to go on display for the first time and provide space for traveling exhibits from other museums and cultural organizations. Current exhibits include:

hssmuseum_website1Captured but not Caught is a traveling photography exhibit from Georgia Southern University Museum that highlights the beauty of Georgia’s native plants and animals.

The Art of Nature in Sandy Springs displays utilitarian and decorative objects from our historically rural community that have been embellished to express individual visions of the natural world. From quilts to paintings, scrapbooks and pottery, nature has always been at the center of artistic expression in Sandy Springs.

“Images of America: Sandy Springs,” a new photo-history book about Sandy Springs, is also available for purchase at the Museum and the HSS office.

The Heritage Sandy Springs Museum is open on Wednesday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and by appointment. Museum admission is $3 for adults, $1 for children ages 6-12, $1 for senior citizens 65 and older and free for Heritages Sandy Springs members and children ages 5 and under. The gift shop is open to the public free of charge. The Museum is located at 6075 Sandy Springs Circle, Sandy Springs, GA 30328. Parking is available on Sandy Springs Place in designated parking lots.
