The Wiliams-Payne House & Museum

Sandy Springs has a story to tell! On Saturday, March 20, 2010 Heritage Sandy Springs celebrated the Grand Opening of the Heritage Sandy Springs Museum.

The Heritage Sandy Springs Museum is the only museum dedicated to sharing the exciting and vibrant story of our community. Located in the re-purposed Williams-Payne House at Heritage Green, visitors have the opportunity to view three new exhibits:

An anchor exhibit will give visitors an overview of community history.  As the largest and most comprehensive exhibit gallery, "Sandy Springs: Land and People" tells the changing story of our community as the home of Native Americans, rural farmers, and modern suburbanites. Interpretive panels depict key transitions in Sandy Springs history, including the Land Rush, Civil War and Reconstruction, the impact of World War II, the area's growth in the late twentieth century and the struggle to become a city.

Changing galleries will allow HSS the space to share in-depth exhibits about historical, seasonal and current events. Changing space will also allow many never-before-seen artifacts from our collection to go on display for the first time and provide space for traveling exhibits from other museums and cultural organizations.HerosOfSSbanner_web1

Opening to the public on August 7, 2011 “Heroes of Sandy Springs,” is a new exhibit in the Heritage Sandy Springs Museum that draws on historical photographs, archives, artifacts, and film clips to tell the story of policing and fire fighting in Sandy Springs. The exhibit actively engages visitors in learning about the long, but little known tradition of policing and fire fighting in Sandy Springs by examining the roots of policing and fire/rescue as the Sandy Springs community developed and grew in population and ethnic diversity. Heroes of Sandy Springs will be located in the changing exhibit galleries of the Heritage Sandy Springs Museum. Each room will feature interpretive panels containing historic photographs and narratives and cases will display artifacts including badges, patches, equipment and other significant items. Visitors will be inspired by the stories of all volunteer groups that worked tirelessly to protect our community, and how the small volunteer forces became the world-class, professional departments that Sandy Springs has today. The exhibit will be on display through February 15, 2012.

HSSturtleTours_webThe Museum welcomes children ages 2-5 and their parents to enjoy “Turtle Tours”. Through stories, hands-on exhibits and crafts, Museum mascots Sandy (chipmunk) and Spring (turtle) will introduce the youngest visitors to history. The tours are based on the Smithsonian Institute’s Early Enrichment program. Tours will last approximately 30 minutes. Please arrive before 11 a.m. to assure a space. The program is free but donations are encouraged. Turtle Tours are held on the following Saturdays:

February 11: Sandy Feeds His Feathery Friends

March 10: Sandy & Spring Plant a Tree
